Dr. Tom Brown
Economist: My favorite science experience happened before I was a scientist. I was a Peace Corps (kȯr) volunteer in rural Paraguay, in the heart of South America. I had grown up in the suburbs. When I arrived in Paraguay, therefore, I didn’t know much about rural life and the natural resources that are so important to people who live off the land. In Paraguay, I learned first-hand about water supply and water quality. I also learned how essential it is that our water resources be protected. My experience in Paraguay pointed me in the direction that, several decades later, I am still following. Now, I study how our success as a society depends on the availability and quality of our water resources.
