absorb

(ǝb sȯrb or ǝb zȯrb): To take in or suck or swallow up.

absorption

(əb sȯrp shən): The process of taking in.

abstract

(ab strakt): Not associated with a specific instance; theoretical.

abundance

bən dənt(s)): A large quantity; plenty.

abundant

bən dənt): Existing or occurring in large amounts.

abundantly

(a bun dənt lē): Marked by great plenty.

academic

(a kə de mik): Of or relating to school or college.

accelerate

(ik se lə rāt): To move faster.

accretion

krē shən): The increase of land by the action of natural forces.

accumulate

kyü m(y)e lāt): To gather or pile up little by little; to increase in quantity, number, or amount.

accumulation

(ə kyü m(y)ə shən): The act of collecting or gathering.

accurate

(a kyə rət): (1) Free from error especially as the result of care; (2) conforming exactly to truth or to a standard.

accustomed

kəs təmd): Being in the habit or custom.

acidic

si dik): Acid-forming or like an acid (an acid is a substance with a pH less than 7).

acidity

si də tē): The quality, state, or degree of being acid. An acid has a pH of less than 7.

adapt

dapt): To change so as to fit a new or specific use or situation.

adaptation

(ad ap shən): Change in an organism or its parts that fits it better for the conditions of its environment.

adobe

bē): A brick or building material made of sun-dried earth and straw.

advantageous

(ad van jǝs): Giving an advantage.

adverse

(ad vərs): Results in negative effects.
