Dr. Emily Heyerdahl sawing into a tree

My favorite science experience is solving ecological puzzles about past wildland fires using tree rings. Just as when I was a young woman, I like being outside all summer collecting data and samples from trees that were alive hundreds of years ago. During the winter and in the laboratory, I also take joy in dating wood samples with a microscope and in exploring data with a computer.
